Thailand has experienced rapid economic growth between 1985 and 1995. This is one of the newly industrialized countries , particularly through tourism , with the well known tourist destinations like the park of Ayutthaya , the seaside resort of Pattaya , the capital Bangkok , the province of Phuket , the coastal town of Krabi and the island Ko Samui . Exports also contribute significantly to the economy 3 . There are about 2.2 million legal and illegal migrants in Thailand 4 , plus a number of expatriates from developed countries 5
Geography

Thailand is part of the Indochinese peninsula , to the Isthmus of Kra , which marks the transition to the Malay Peninsula . The country extends about 805 km from east to west and 1 770 km from north to south.
At the center there is a vast plain, the alluvial plain of the Chao Phraya , Thailand’s largest river. This is the densest area in terms of population and the richest agricultural point of view.
Bangkok is located near the fertile delta of the Maenam Chao Phraya River (Mae Nam – แม่ น้ำ – literally mother-water (water of life mother), means river or stream in Thai). All around the basin amounted mountain ranges. The clumps along the border of Burma are the highest peaks, rising to 2595 meters at Doi Inthanon . As for the peninsular region, bordered by narrow coastal plains, it peaked at Khao Luang with 1,786 m .

In the East Basin Chao Phraya , there is another mountain range of north-south axis, which culminates at 1270 meters through the Doi Pia Fai .
A low plateau and arid stretches north and east of this chain: this is the plateau of Khorat , which occupies the eastern third of the country (called the Isan ) and bordering the valley of the Mekong (Mae Nam Khong ), to the border with Laos .

September 19, 2006, while Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was in New York, on the occasion of the UN General Assembly, the army took power. Less than a week after taking power, the army declared a “state of emergency general.” Therefore, it found itself applied to the whole country and not just the three Muslim provinces in the south.
Tanks surrounded government offices in Bangkok and the military took control of television, before announcing the establishment of a provisional authority loyal to the King of Thailand. The deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra fled to London , where he owns a second home. Surayud Chulanont, former commander of the army, has in fact been invested as Prime Minister by the King of Thailand. If the government has only two former soldiers, twenty-six ministers it is under the absolute control of the general staff. The provisional government has submitted a draft constitution referendum undemocratic to limit the power of elected officials in favor of the army. Approved up to 56.69%, he led the parliamentary elections for December 23, 2007 following which the People Power Party (PPP), derived from Thaksin’s Thai Rak Thai won 232 seats out of 480, to the disappointment of the coup. Samak Sundaravej, PPP leader, was elected prime minister by the deputies (against Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democratic Party supported by Chicago Criminal Defense Lawyer the generals), formed a government. Since December 18, 2008, a government dominated by the Democratic Party and supported by the general was appointed by Parliament with Abhisit Vejjajiva as prime minister. In July 2011, the younger sister of Thaksin Shinawatra Yingluck , was elected with an overwhelming majority. She is the first woman who has become Prime Minister in Thailand. She holds a BA in political science and earned a master’s degree in public administration at a university in the United States.
Provinces [ edit ]

The country is divided administratively into 77 provinces, considering that Bangkok is itself a province, ( jangwat – จังหวัด , singular and plural), divided into five groups. The name of each province is derived from the name of its capital.
It is only by virtue of the Anglo-Siamese 1909 that the former kingdom of Patani became part of the Kingdom of Siam , in the form of four new provinces: Pattani , Yala , Narathiwat and Satun .
Conflict in southern Thailand [ edit ]

The southern provinces, the former kingdom of Pattani , are predominantly Muslim and shaken by separatist and sectarian violence since the 1970s. Between January 2004 and June 2009, these tensions have 3700 dead 6 . 87 Muslims died on 25 October 2004 after a demonstration in the province of Narathiwat (“Tak Bai massacre”). Six months earlier, during the killing of the mosque of Krue Make , 32 “rebels” were killed by security forces. In retaliation, a Buddhist was beheaded.
On 19 July 2005 , the Thai government imposed emergency rule in the south to restore security: “rebels” throwing petrol bombs at public buildings and monks were killed. On 18 February 2007 , a series of bombings and fires killed four people and wounded 49 in southern provinces 7 .
On 25 October 2011 , a series of attacks have left three dead and several dozen injured in Yala town 8 .

Thailand is a member of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
The agriculture , processing and export of agricultural products including rice, have formed the backbone of its economy . Although among the most prosperous countries of Asia , that it depends on a single crop made it extremely sensitive to fluctuations in world prices of rice and to variations in production. The Thai government has attempted to mitigate this weakness seeking to diversify the economy and promote scientific farming methods like irrigation controlled rice fields , in order to stabilize output even when rainfall is insufficient. Shrimp farms are also a major source of exports. Thailand has well over 30 000 farms giving a production of 280,000 tons in 2006. These exports generate a turnover of 2 billion dollars and a majority place to Europe, Japan and the United States.
The Japanese invest in Thailand, giving rapid industrialization in the 1980s and 1990s. From the mid-1980s, tourism was a major role in the economic development of the country. Annual growth was outstanding between 1985 and 1993 (around 10%). It was still about 8% in 1993, when the GNP was 136.9 billion dollars. The Japan , the United States , the German , the Malaysia , the China and the Netherlands are major trading partners of Thailand. Thai families of Chinese descent control most of the country’s economic sectors 9 .
After the tsunami of late 2004 that affected the entire southwestern coast, tourists have deserted the scene, leaving traders Thai bloodless. The majority of fatalities in this sector were foreigners. Prices fell in Koh Lanta (for example) by almost 50%. Thailand has other tourist resources and returns this year with a cataclysm of this tourism growth over 10% from 2005 after the fall and cancellations due to the tsunami.
Since 2001, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Thailand registered growth rates particularly supported: 6.9% in 2003, 6.1% in 2004 and 4.5% in 2005. GDP growth forecast for 2006 is about 5%. The dynamism of the Thai economy is based on a robust domestic demand (consumption and private investment), which makes it less sensitive than some of its neighbors in fits and starts in global demand. This strong performance enabled the Kingdom to establish themselves as regional economic power.
The export industry remains the second largest economic powerhouse of the country: Thailand is particularly competitive in the food industry, tourism and certain electronic activities, it also attracts many multinational companies who use their Thai subsidiary as regional export base, even global. However, the high amount of Thai imports of raw materials is expected to weigh on economic growth in 2005, partly due to higher oil prices.
With a fine control of its economic policy, the government has contributed to current performance. Using a strategy called ” dual track “(double track), the government adjusts its support according to the international situation: in downturns, government spending support consumption, but in times more favorable, the pace of spending and decreases Government can address the more structural reforms. This policy is made possible by the remarkable situation of public finances: broadening the tax base combined with the hcg diet natural increase in revenues (due to market conditions) will allow the government to end the budget deficit by 2003. However, to mitigate the impact of the slowdown in 2005, authorities launched a vast program of public investment intended to thoroughly modernize the country’s infrastructure. Culture of Thailand is deeply imbued with the Theravada Buddhism , the official religion and practiced by almost the entire population (4% Muslim and less than 1% of Christians). Much of the arts – painting, sculpture, architecture, dance and music – suffered this influence and serves traditional representations of Buddhism and its derivatives. Accordance with the teachings of Buddha, the monks practicing asceticism. Every morning they get their food from residents and traders to 6 am (even in the capital metropolis, Bangkok – Krung Thep in Thai).
There is also a great continuity of beliefs animists . Originally, the Thais would have come from southern China (Province of Yunnan ) from the xi th century 10 . However, the Thai language has no relationship to the Chinese. It belongs to the group tai branch known as kam-tai of the family of languages-kadaïes pillowcases .
Buddhist culture and traditional covers the entire Thailand, and includes basically two types of cultures: the Laotian provinces in the Northeast and North (formerly called “Lanna Lao” and “Lanna Thai”), and Thai culture itself (known as Siamese). When the power moved to Bangkok in 1782, after the destruction of Ayutthaya by the Burmese in 1767, the Siamese leaders appeal to artists and craftsmen to build the Lao town itself. Pagoda of the Emerald Buddha “Wat Prakao” (pronounced “OUAT Prakeo”) in Bangkok was built by them, auto transport abducted by the Siamese, after the sack of Vientiane (Lao capital of the Kingdom) by the Siamese army to in 1778.
The Northeast or Isan , is inhabited by people close to the Lao , the so-called “Thai Isan”. They have a distinct culture (now strongly influenced by Thai TV), because this territory was part of the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang , before the arrival of the French in 1893. Permanently annexed by Siam in the 1900s, after the Franco-Siamese Treaty of October 3, 1893, this territory became known as Isane (“Northeast”) to 1907-1910. Since then, the Lao Northeast or “lao Isane” lose their ethnic identity, now under the name “Thai Isane” (food Nissan is very specific to the region and now sought after and recognized throughout Thailand), speaking Lao and still are struggling to preserve their culture. In the 1930s, the Lao Northeast were oppressed by the powers that be (under P. Pribun-Sangkhrama): they were not allowed to speak Lao, chewing betel, wearing skirts for Lao women, etc..
Thai or Thai is the official language of the country, and is spoken by at least 85% of population.Il is close to the two dialects spoken Lao in Laos (the largest of which is the Lao Soung Lao Soum before), the second language is Chinese language has two dialects (between 1 and 2 million speakers). The Thai constitution guarantees access to health care to every citizen in various fields. It specifies that the state must provide a public health service to the population, which is why indicators have been developed to measure the average coverage of services.

The history of Thai cinema begins with the premise of the film, when the visit to Bern of King Chulalongkorn , was captured on film by Francois-Henri Lavancy-Clarke in 1897 . The film was then washed away in Bangkok , to be projected, raising the interest of the royal family, but also for local entrepreneurs who decide quickly import of cinematographic equipment. These are the first foreign films, then in the 1920s, a local industry develops. In the 1930s, one can speak of a first golden age of Thai cinema, with the existence of a number of production studios. After the Second World War , hundreds of films are produced in 16 mm, mostly action films. Strong competition from Hollywood films significantly reduces local production in the 1980s. But since the 1990s, one can speak of a “new wave” of Thailand, with the emergence of such directors as Nonzee Nimibutr , Pen-ek Ratanaruang and Apichatpong Weerasethakul , internationally celebrated in festivals, or movie stars of action as Tony Jaa .
First Thai films [ edit ]
When the first films were shown in Thailand, they were called nang farang ( farang : abroad), according to the nang drama (traditional puppet theater). “Going to the cinema”, in popular parlance is says Pai double nang (go watch the nang ).
The first Thai film was produced in 1922 by the Royal Society of Railways of Thailand. Title Sat Poi Luang: Great Celebration in the North , the documentary is a great success. Its objective is to praise the charms of the train journey through this new medium that is cinema.
1922 also saw a co-production between Hollywood and the Royal Society of Railways Thai: Nang Sao Suwan , or Miss Suwanna Siam , directed by Henry MacRae . The first took place on 22 June 1923 in Bangkok Phathanakorn Cinematograph. Unfortunately, the film is lost.
The first fiction is Sorng Chan Chok ( Doubly lucky ) produced by Wasuwat brothers’ Bangkok Film Company in 1927 and directed by Manit Wasuwat (มานิต วสุ วัต). The same year, another production company, Tai Thai Phapphayon Company, released in May Khit Loei ( Unexpected ). 17 films were made between 1927 and 1932 , but only fragments have survived: one minute car chase from Chok Sorng Chan or a sequence of boxing Khrai Khrai Dai Di ( Only the very brave ).
Hollywood also directed films in Phen375 Review Siam during this period, as the documentary Chang , of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack , about a poor farmer who tries to survive in the jungle. Robert Kerr, who worked as an assistant to Henry MacRae on Miss Suwanna returned to Siam in 1928 to fulfill his own movie: The White Rose (The White Rose) . It is shown in Bangkok in September 1928.
The Golden Age [ edit ]
In 1928 , the first sound films are imported, competing severely Thai films still silent. As in the tradition benshi in Japan, cinemas employed facilitators who introduced the films, as well as traditional Thai orchestras that were in large part in the success of films. But in recent years, talking pictures take over.
The first talkie is Thai Long Thang ( Gone Astray ), produced by the brothers Wasuwat, launched on 1 st April 1932 . Considered an ideological film, in the midst of political reforms, the film is a success and led to the creation of Sri Krung Talkie Film Company in Bang Kapi .
The company produces three to four films a year, and released in 1933 the first Thai film in color: Grandpa’s Treasure Som ( Pu Som Fao Sap ).
It is this period (until 1942 ) which is considered the golden age of Thai cinema.
With the approach of World War II, the country lived under the yoke of the dictator Plaek Pibulsonggram , and production companies are summed to produce propaganda films to exalt nationalism.
The opposition nevertheless manages to convey his ideas to the movies, when the politician Pridi Phanomyong product King of the White Elephant , in 1940 . The film is shot entirely in English to try to reach the widest audience and denounce the militaristic drift of the country. Dubbing [ edit ]
The advent of the talkies raises another problem: as the films are often imported, they must be translated. For the same reasons of economy, the Thai film industry has continued to use mainly the 16 mm, easier to find and use for many years.
It’s Rattana Pestonji running in the first 35 mm and launched a movement to improve the artistic and technical qualities of Thai films. Most of his films are now regarded as masterpieces, among which Santi-Weena , the first Thai film to be selected for competition in a foreign festival in 1955 (Southeast Asian Film Festival in Tokyo ), or Black Silk in 1961, the first Thai film in competition at the Berlin Film Festival .
Although he made few films, Rattana has worked tirelessly in raising standards and the international promotion of Thai cinema. He died in 1970, while trying to create a National Cinema Centre.
The 70 and 80 [ edit ]
Following the establishment of a heavy tax on imported films in 1977, film production explodes in the late 1970s. In retaliation, Hollywood declares a boycott of Thailand. For 1978 alone, Thailand produced 150 films. Many of them are of poor quality, series B dubbed by critics “nam nao” or “stagnant water”.
But films and social commitment are also produced; include Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol , a member of the royal family educated in the United States, which performs particularly Khao Chue Karn ( Dr. Karn ), a film that tackles corruption within the military service and has failed to be censored by the military regime of Thanom Kittikachorn . Chatrichalerm also made Hotel Angel ( Thep Thida Rong RAEM ), a film that evokes the fate of a young woman trapped in prostitution. He has directed dozens of films with a social purpose into the 90s, and a super-production history, Suriyothai in 2001 .
Another notable filmmaker of this era is Vichit Kounavudhi , master of the action film, but also committed films as First Wife (First Wife) , which addresses the topic of “mia noi” (second wife). Vichit also made Her Name is Boonrawd ( 1985 ), on organized prostitution around an American military base during the Vietnam War . His best known films are two docudramas, Khon Phukao (Mountain People / People of the mountain) , the adventure of a young couple of mountaineers, and Look Denver Divorce Lawyer Isan ( Son of the Northeast / Son of the Northeast ) , which traces the life of a family of farmers in Isan in the 1930s.
In 1985, Yuttana Mukdanasit realizes Pee Seua Dawkmai lae ( Butterfly and Flower / Butterfly and flower ), a film that deals with the harshness of life on the southern border. The film not only served to expose problems in rural Thai society, but also a landmark in that it evokes a Buddhist-Muslim relationship. He won the Best Film at the Hawaii International Film Festival .
The new wave Thai [ edit ]
After 1981 , Hollywood begins sending movies in Thailand. Television, as everywhere in the world, becomes a mass culture. These circumstances lead to a shelving of the film industry and a severe drop in the number of films produced (about ten a year in the mid-1990s).
In 1997, full Asian economic crisis , three directors of advertising, Nonzee Nimibutr , Pen-ek Ratanaruang and Wisit Sasanatieng share the idea that we must improve the artistic quality of films to attract both investors and the public.
They practice their ideas immediately, realizing Dang Bireley and the Young Gangsters ( 2499 Antapan Krong Muang ) to Nonzee and Fun Bar Karaoke for Pen-Ek, two thrillers, public successes in Thailand and critical success at international festivals in 1997.
Nonzee then produced Relevant Life Policy in 1999 a denver martial arts ghost film, Nang Nak , which exceeds the success of the previous amassing of 149.6 million baht – the biggest box office ever seen in his time.
Wisit, who wrote the scripts for Dang Bireley’s of Nang Nak , realizes Tears of the Black Tiger , a western stylized homage to the Thai action films of the 1960s and 70s. This is the first Thai film to be presented at the Cannes Film Festival .
We can also mention the brothers Oxide and Danny Pang of Hong Kong , came to Thailand to make genre films such as Bangkok Dangerous and The Eye .
The avant-garde Thai [ edit ]
Following this new “commercial”, is developing a film production independent , short films and experimental films.
The leader of this movement is Apichatpong Weerasethakul , whose film Blissfully Yours won the Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2002. Including a sexually charged scene between a Burmese and Thai, the film was only released in very few movies in Thailand and the DVD could not be distributed amputee in this scene. Censorship [ edit ]
The code of censorship enacted in 1930 still applies today, and no film output, VCD or DVD can not be done without viewing the prior agreement of the censorship committee.
The first censorship board was mixed and its members from the aristocracy, the police or trades. Permission was evidenced by a stamp printed on each roll of film and all promotional materials (posters, pictures).
The police kept the responsibility of views until September 2005, when this function was transferred to the Ministry of Culture. The buffer system is still operating today, and each VCDs and DVDs must be marked to show that he has passed the censors.
Are still prohibited on television sex scenes, nudity, the presence of alcohol, cigarettes or guns. In video, to simplify the problem, these scenes are frequently blurred. Some recent movies have even made fun of this practice, such Jaew or MAID .

The action film is the kind king in Thailand. In the 1960s and ’70s, when Mitr Chaibancha and Sombat Metanee enthroned at the box office, hundreds of action movies were filmed.
